Undergraduate Student Awards

Undergraduate students are eligible to apply for a range of School-specific, Faculty-specific, UBC, and external awards.

Most awards, scholarships, and prizes do not require an application or nomination. Unless otherwise specified, the awards are conferred on the recommendation of the School, academic unit, or organization. Learn about other awards you may be eligible for on the Student Services website.

School of Nursing Awards

The Dawn Stinson Memorial Award in Nursing was established by Mitch Stinson, along with family and friends, in memory of Dawn Stinson (1962-2020). Dawn was born in Liverpool, England. She received her nursing degree while raising her young family in Kelowna, British Columbia, undertook training in England and completed her practicum in Belize. Dawn practiced outpost and transition nursing, touching the lives of many patients in British Columbia and Washington. This award was established in recognition of Dawn’s accomplishments as a nurse and her belief in the importance of lifelong learning.

Amount: $3,000

Eligibility: Preference given to a mature student in good academic standing.

Deadline: The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing each April.

This Irma Kurtz Memorial Award for Rural and Remote Practice for Indigenous Nursing Students is offered by family and friends of Irma Kurtz to a fourth-year Indigenous student in the School of Nursing. The award is established in loving memory of Irma Kurtz who, as a Metis woman, daughter, sister, mother and grandmother, loved the north and had a deep connection to the land, water, wildlife and serenity it provided for physical, emotional, social and spiritual health.

Amount: $1,250

Eligibility: Preference is given to a Metis, First Nations, or Inuit student who is pursuing a nursing career in rural and remote communities.

Deadline: The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing each April.

This award is offered by Joanne Konnert to a fourth-year student in the School of Nursing program. Joanne Konnert is a double UBC alumna, BSN ’71, MSN ’77, former COO of the Interior Health Authority, and passionately encourages nurses to seek careers in areas of mental health care.

Amount: $3,000

Eligibility: Preference is given to a student who shows great promise in the field of mental health in nursing.

Deadline: The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing each April.

This award has been made available through an endowment established by Kelowna Toyota for a third or fourth-year student in the School of Nursing.

Amount: $2,300

Eligibility: Preference is given to a student who has demonstrated active involvement, in the form of leadership or engagement, within the School of Nursing, the university campus or their community. The award is adjudicated by the School of Nursing.

Deadline: The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing each April.

This award has been made available through an endowment established by the family and friends of Lisa Wensink, along with matching funds from the University of British Columbia. Lisa Wensink was a double alumna (BSc ’07, MSc ’16) who found her calling when she became a registered nurse. Her concern and compassion for those struggling with mental illness is where Lisa made such a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable in the community.

Amount: $6,300

Eligibility: Preference is given to a School of Nursing student who excels in areas of mental health training and who may be a mature student.

Deadline: The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing each April.

Travel grants have been made available by a private British Columbia foundation to fourth-year School of Nursing students. The grants are intended to encourage and support nursing students to participate in rural and remote practicums by helping to defer the transportation and accommodation expenses associated with these practicums.

Amount: $200 to $3,350

Eligibility: Students participating in practicums in rural and remote areas of British Columbia.

Deadline: The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing each April.

our awards of $5,000 each have been made available annually through a gift from the Rotary Club of Kelowna Foundation, along with matching funds from The University of British Columbia, for undergraduate nursing students in the School of Nursing.

Amount: $5,000

Eligibility: Two awards will go to third-year mature students and two awards will go to fourth-year students in advanced training.

Deadline: The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing each April.

This prize is offered by the Lemiski family in memory of Sharon Lemiski.

Amount: $475

Eligibility: A student with high academic standing in third or fourth year of the School of Nursing.

Deadline: The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing each April.

This award has been made available through an endowment established by the Estate of Margarita Dale. Margarita Dale was a Kelowna resident and a supporter of community health.

Amount: $2,000

Eligibility: Awarded to the graduating student with the highest grade-point average for each of years three and four in the School of Nursing.

Deadline: The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing each April.

School of Health and Exercise Sciences Awards

Each Spring, the CSEP invites each Canadian university with an undergraduate program in physical education, human kinetics, or related disciplines to present the CSEP/SCPE Undergraduate Student Award.

Amount: Honorific only

Eligibility: A graduating student with the highest standing in the scientific portion of the curriculum. The awardee must be CSEP certified.

Deadline: April

Nationally, this award is given annually to graduating students in Kinesiology and Physical Education programs at member universities to recognize leadership, academic success, and commitment to the professions.

Amount: Honorific only

Eligibility: Awarded to a graduating student who has shown significant leadership capacity within on-campus and/or off-campus activities while maintaining a high academic standing (minimum overall GPA is 3.0).

Deadline: April

Two awards are offered by the Human Kinetics Student Association to support a third- and fourth-year student in the human kinetics program.

Amount: $1,500

Eligibility: Preference is given to a student who excels academically in the program and has demonstrated community impact through on- and off-campus initiatives in health benefitting the community.

Deadline: The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Health and Exercise Sciences each April.

The SURFs were established in 2021 to serve as a catalyst for undergraduate student research training within the School of Health and Exercise Sciences. This program funds fellowships each year from 2021 through 2025, with fellows completing 12-16 weeks of research training. Amount: $7,250 – $9,500

Eligibility: Successfully completed at least two years of an undergraduate degree.

Deadline: February

Research awards available through NSERC for undergraduate students to work full-time in a research lab. Students and supervisors apply using NSERC forms and UBC Transcripts. Visit NSERC Undergraduate Research Award to learn more and apply.

Amount: $6,000 base value

Eligibility: Achieved a satisfactory cumulative average over the previous years of study.

Deadline: Generally in February

 

Faculty of Health and Social Development Awards

This prize has been endowed by Grant and Beryl Carnine to honour their son, Bryce Carnine. The prize is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student in the Faculty of Health and Social Development who has conducted a research project or special initiative related in Oncology as it relates to the prevention and/or cure of cancer, or its relation to improving quality of life to cancer patients. Scholastic achievements of candidates are also considered. Application details to be updated in early 2025.

Amount: $3,450

Eligibility: All currently registered students in FHSD: Canadian, permanent residents, and international students are eligible for this prize.

In memory of her husband Bill Tymchuk, the generous support of Leida Tymchuk has established the Bill Tymchuk Cancer Research Award Endowment to support cancer research at UBC’s Okanagan campus. In 1976, Bull Tymchuk founded the Kelowna law firm of Tymchuk, Brown and Hattori, and later became a financial consultant with CIBC Wood Gundy. Bill Tymchuk’s colleagues at CIBC Wood Gundy have also generously contributed to the endowment. Application details to be updated in early 2025.

Amount: $4,000

Eligibility: All full-time graduate and undergraduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty in the Faculty of Health and Social Development.

Deadline: April 15 of each year.

UBC Okanagan Awards

The Rick and Yasmin Thorpe and Friends Scholarship assists undergraduate students who are graduates of Summerland Secondary School, Penticton Secondary School, Princess Margaret Secondary School, or Penticton Christian School who are registered in full-time studies at UBC Okanagan in any one of the following programs: Management, Engineering, English, Creative Writing, Nursing, or Science. Amount: $2,500

Eligibility: Canadian citizens/permanent residents who graduated from an eligible secondary school and are registered full-time at UBC Okanagan in Management, Engineering, English, Creative Writing, Nursing or Science.

Deadline: All eligible transfer students are automatically considered.

An award is offered by the Henderson family through the Shuswap Community Foundation to an undergraduate or graduate student at The University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus who is participating in an international health and/or international community development initiative taking place in a developing country, with preference given to an international student. The application form is updated in February/March.

Amount: Variable each year

Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students participating in an international health and/or international community development initiative, with preference given to an international student. The application form is updated in the Winter 2 term.

Deadline: Early spring. Exact date to be determined.

A $500 scholarship has been endowed by friends and colleagues in honour of Dr. John H.V. Gilbert for an outstanding student at UBC Vancouver or UBC Okanagan who, having completed the penultimate year of any health or human services degree program, combines academic excellence and demonstrated student leadership in interprofessional education for collaborative patient-centred practice. A scholarship of $900 has been endowed by family, friends and colleagues of the late Jessie Gordon MacCarthy, who for 10 years contributed through teaching, administration, and research to the development of the health sciences at UBC. Visit the UBC Health website to learn more and apply.

Eligibility: students who, having completed the penultimate year of any health program, combines academic excellence, demonstrated interest, and leadership in the field of community and/or population health.
